Restaurant Nippon opened in August 1963, becoming the first Japanese Restaurant in the U.S.A. with an authentic sushi bar. In 1988, we introduced nihachi soba (with ratio of 80% of buckwheat flour to 20% of wheat flour) made from buckwheat seeds cultivated at our own farm in CANADA. In 1989, after five years of negotiations with the F.D.A., we received an exclusive license to import Japanese " Tiger Blow Fish " ( Tora Fugu). In November 2006, we became the only importers of natural wasabi from the Gifu prefecture, Japan. In 2007, we started producing and serving tofu, home-made daily with soy beans cultivated at the Canadian farm. On November 11, 2009, for the above contributions in the promotion of Japanese culture through Japanese food, owner and president of Restaurant Nippon, Nobuyoshi Kuraoka, was awarded by the Japanese Government " The Order of The Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette ", (Tantamount to British Knighthood )

NY restaurant week tasting menu was wonderful. Must come back for deadly fugu fish sashimi during dinner next time!

The fugu sushi and the sukiyaki are great!

I love this restaurant. It consistently serves good food and the staff are very nice. This quality of the fish seems very good too. Atmosphere also reminds me of Japan. It is on the expensive side since they serve sushi.

Great restaurant, very traditional - real Japanese food, we took the set menu for 56$ and it was wonderful choice with many kinds of food - we will definitely come back in the future

Superb sushi and great service

This place is no frills, even slightly run down... But charming in an old-new-york kind of way! I love coming here for a few tasty appetizers, ice cold Japanese beer and sukiyaki for a super cosy dinner in the wintertime 🙂

Lovely restaurant and excellent staff.

Just because is has a Japanese name doesn't mean you're getting Japanese qualityIf you want "real" Japanese food, ask me:)

Amazing Soba Salad (best with Salmon or Chicken) also great sushi for midtown and reasonable prices. In addition they have a very traditional fried tempura with not to much batter on it, which makes it better then at many other places. I order out or eat once a week at Nippon

excellent fish. The environment is quiet and clean. worth the money.

By all accounts, including many Japanese friends from all over, the best Japanese restaurant in the city. I cannot recommend any one dish without implying that it's better than the others. It's all top notch and I've between going there literally for fifty years. U said I wouldn't but the octopus is like butter. Sushi superb. Eat at the sushi counter or a table. Both are unparalleled but tempura, piece by piece, right out of the oil the is unsurpassed.

Great tempura made to order at the counter. Don't miss the grilled duck breast appetizer and the jumbo shrimp tempura!

Straight out of the 60's! This is America and you pay a premium for Japanese food anywhere, no matter the quality. Here at least the quality is there. The service is exceptional and the food is very good. The sukiyaki, miso soup and the mocha dessert were very good, not far from what you might expect in Japan.

A bit pricey for the amount and quality of the food.

I'd only tried some average sushis in India but that was only until three days back when I had the utmost pleasure to visit Soba Nippon and have some incredible sushi. The sushi is served with a beautiful sharp knife and the presentation is pretty decent with tomato and a slice of lemon. The sushi has my heart from it's very first bite.

Living just a few blocks away from Nippon, it has certainly become our go-to for special occasions. The service is always quick and good, and the food is AMAZING.

Went here during Restaurant Week. Didn't try the sushi, but the other food was very good. The staff was nice and the service was great. Overall not much to criticize except maybe the price.

Enjoyed the Kobe Beef Harami Don. Also had the Wasabi Pork Shumai which had a nice kick and cleared out the sinuses. Ha ha, that's wasabi for ya. Busy place right around 7 PM on a Sunday, but not impossible to get a seat with a short wait. Enjoy!

Pricier side of cuisine choices, we went for a prefixed meal and it was very nice. Courteous waiter, dishes came out in a well paced. Aesthetically pleasing. Made me miss japan. Also, we will most likely go back to try the fugu (blowfish).

Needs a complete overhaul. Punto finale.

I’ve been wanting to eat fugu for a decade. Nippon did not disappoint. If you want to try it. This is the place.

I love this place it has been around for years. They always offer the best service and amazing food for a truly rememberable experience. One of the last old school midtown business spots always a great time and who knows occasionally there are famous ppl to. The owner is amazing and truly cares about his customers, going as a far as to not let me pour my own sake.. a true NYC gem great for all occasions.

4 star is right on the marks. The tempura was world class goodness in your mouth. The miso eggplant, the sukiyaki, the mushroom broth, the ice cream, the soft-shell crab in vinegar were good. The homemade renowned soba was actually on the tougher chewier side. The ham and cheese, are you kidding me? All in all a good meal. However service can be challenging as it is close to UN and you see lots of officers around and you become an afterthought.

Local japanese... clean and healthy food...
